Everyday Goose Island smells the wonderful coffee roasting next to our brewery at Chicago's Intelligentsia Coffee and Tea. This world class roaster puts the same passion and skill into their coffee as Goose Island does with its beer. This excellent stout is made with a different coffee from our friends next door each year. With the change in coffee comes a change in the flavor profile, making each release truly unique from the previous years.
2012 Release - Intelligentsia La Tortuga Beans
"A- Pours like BCBS should: oil-slick black. No head, but a ring of mocha-colored foam around the edge of the glass. Huge legs. 4.
S- Amazing. HUGE blast of fresh-pressed coffee, bourbon, wood, vanilla, coconut, cinnamon(?!), chocolate/fudge/cake batter. Should I go on? 5.
T- Follows the nose to a "T". Starts off with waves of freshly ground coffee...the good stuff none of that bagged Harbucks dogsh#t. Followed by caramel/vanilla/oak, slight bourbon, coconut, dark chocolate, and again a bit of spiciness. I'm starting to think it was the variety of bean they used this year. Doesn't get much better than this. 4.5.
M- Thick, slick, and ahhh...something perverse for the 3rd one. Ridiculously smooth as well. No hint of a 14% beer here. Carbonation is jussst a touch high for my liking, but I'll live. 4.
O- Easily the best coffee stout (BA or not) made. I look forward to this one every year and wish I could get more than one bottle! 4.5" - BeerAdvocate.com
